This project was completed during my final “sound” class. Saying I was happy to have taken this class is an understatement. I did not think I had any interest in sound, this class changed my mind.

For this project, each student was required to select a clip of our choosing (could not be a commercial or movie clip) mute the sound and re-create all sound, including all effects as well as dialogue. I chose this clip because the message behind it was very deep and moving. I strongly feel that it’s important for the designer to attach oneself to a piece that means something to them. I find it both easier and more fulfilling for the designer to work on something important to them.

Very soon into this project I learned that I chose a very difficult clip. The original clip was solely background music, no sound effects, no dialogue. There were no sources to feed of off, no direction to assist my sound effects and overall sound design. The product of foley, sound effects, and music sampling were used to create this project and after 30+ hours of hard and in depth work, my own design moved me and it was an amazing feeling of accomplishment.

Foley

This project was completed early in my academic learning. The project required selecting a clip of our choosing (30 seconds - 1 minute) mute the audio, and re-create the sound design. This consisted of primarily foley, with the use of props to perform each and every sound. These props contained everything from latex gloves, literal junk found in the room closet, sound effects with our mouths and skin, to an action figure.

We were also required to perform the dialogue for each character. Can you guess which character I narrated? (Hint: the  answer is the gingerbread man). We recorded the entirety of the sounds in sync with the picture (clip).  This was an amazing learning experience and this is the moment I fell in love with foley. This is the number one job in this industry where creativity needs to comes in and take over. Creativity and strategy is essential in the foley process, which is right up my alley.
